April 2010 -- Los Altos, CA: Our 61st Season of ‘Young Artists, Old Masters’ comes to a jubilant close with the debut performance of the Irving M. Klein International String Competition winner and a program dedicated to the ultimate Romantic composer, Tchaikovsky. Tchaikovsky selections include Eugene Onegin: Polonaise; Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 35; and Symphony No. 5 in E Minor, Op. 64.
Performances take place on Friday and Saturday May 21 & 22 at 8pm at the San Mateo Performing Arts Center and the Flint Center in Cupertino. Pre-concert lecture begins both evenings at 7pm. Tickets are $35 General Admission, $30 Senior/Student and $10 Youth.
We’re delighted to introduce the 2009 Klein String Competition winner Nikki Chooi— joining us for Tchaikovsky’s magnificent Violin Concerto. This piece embodies the Romantic ideal, with the heroic soloist against the backdrop of a robust orchestra, and the solo part infused with an especially warm lyricism. Audiences will see why Mr. Chooi won the Klein String competition, in three movements of soaring melody, serene intimacy and brilliant showmanship. The evening also includes Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony— a sprawling tour de force, with all four movements linked by one musical FATE theme and ending with a blaze of soaring triumph.
“We always look forward to performing these emotive and luminous pieces by Tchaikovsky. His crises of personal identity, his disastrous marriage, and the sudden end of his only lengthy and warm friendship drove him to express his turbulent emotional cycles in music that speaks with great directness and expressiveness” remarks Music Director & Conductor, Mitchell Sardou Klein.
The Peninsula Symphony, a 90-member community orchestra led by Music Director and Conductor Mitchell Sardou Klein, celebrates its 60th anniversary of providing unique and first-class music to the Bay Area community.
